Thank you so much for stopping by to take a look at my humble little photography website!
My name is Brad Powell and I am a long-time resident of beautiful Vancouver Island. I moved to our island paradise with my family wayyyyyy back when Pierre Trudeau was our Prime Minister, the Beatles were still together, and the food was actually really good on the BC Ferries!
As far as photography goes, I am truly a “Digital Baby”. I had several cameras in the “Film Era” but really I just took snapshots and had no interest in the actual art of photography.
I've always been intrigued by new technologies, and had been a computer user since the late 1980's. So when I started seeing digital cameras that took pictures that were stored on computer drives I was very intrigued! I then bought a series of the best of the early digital cameras.
My 1st digital camera, the Kodak DC280
Bought in 1999, this 2 megapixel monster had a 30mm-60mm F3.0 lens and an honest to goodness 1.8 inch lcd rear display! It also had a wonderful low light option of 200 iso!!
My 2nd digital camera, the Olympus C-730
Bought in 2002 this beautiful camera had a 3 megapixel sensor and a 38-300mm F2.8 zoom lens! I loved this camera and that zoom!
My 3rd digital camera, the Olympus C8080
Bought in 2004, this was the most amazing camera I had ever seen at the time. 8 megapixels and a beautiful 28-140mm 2.4 Zuiko lens. It even had an articulating rear lcd!
These cameras were fun to play with and you just knew this was only the beginning of what was possible for digital photography. And what REALLY caught my interest was the free photo editing software that these cameras came with. I think my first editing software I used was Photoshop LE? Suddenly I had all this creative control over my images through my computer and I was hooked!
Pretty soon I realized that I really loved photography and wanted to do more than just take snapshots and record images of what I saw every day. The next progression in my love affair with digital photography was to then join our local photography Club in Nanaimo, the very progressive Harbour City Photography Club.
It was at the Harbour City Photography Club in Nanaimo, that I started to learn about the real foundations of good photography, such as composition, lighting, and learning the camera’s controls and functions and capabilities. I was also constantly inspired and challenged by the works of the other talented photographers (such as Wayne Buhr and Kelli Etheridge) in the Club. But mainly I was also very fortunate to be mentored by other more experienced Club members such as the late Bob Goerzen and the truly amazing Sean Sherstone. It means so much to an aspiring photographer to be encouraged and inspired by photographers you admire. It gives you the confidence to express yourself artistically, and to constantly push your own boundaries.
These days I belong to two really great photography clubs. The Oceanside Photographers Club in Qualicum Beach and the Harbour City Photography Club in Nanaimo, and I try to get out to as many meetings as I can.
Photography is my creative passion. It is not often that I don’t have a camera by my side. I try to get out and explore and photograph as much of my home, the beautiful Vancouver Island, as possible. From our very British Capital, Victoria, at the south end of the Island, all the way up to Port Hardy at the rugged north end, chances are you’ll run into me and my camera and tripod somewhere sometime!
I also constantly try to expand my knowledge of photography and digital editing. I love to challenge myself and experiment with new photography techniques. Twilight and Night photography are my favourites! I am also currently working on improving my HDR, Exposure Blending, Panoramas, and Long Exposures.
So please stop in regularly to check out my blog and see what I've been up to photography-wise and make sure to let me know you were here!
