Thank you so much for stopping by to take a look at my humble little photography website!
My name is Brad Powell and I am a long-time Vancouver Island resident. I moved to beautiful Vancouver Island with my family wayyyyyy back when Pierre Trudeau was our Prime Minister, the Beatles were still together, and the food was actually quite good on the BC Ferries!
As far as photography goes, I am truly a “Digital Baby”. I had several cameras in the “Film Era” but really I just took snapshots and had no interest in the actual art of photography. I've always been intrigued by new technology, and bought a series of the first compact digital cameras, such as the remarkable (for it’s time) 2mp Kodak DC280 in 1999 and the 3mp Olympus C730UZ in 2002. These cameras were fun to play with and you just had a feeling this was only the beginning for digital photography. But what REALLY caught my interest was the free photo editing software that the cameras came with. I think my first software was Photoshop LE? Anyways, suddenly I had all this creative control over my images through my computer and I was hooked!
The next progression in my love affair with digital photography was to join our local photography Club in Nanaimo, the very progressive Harbour City Photography Club. I started off in the Club using an Olympus C8080 and later progressed to the amazing Canon 20D which I have hung on right up to this day and still use on occasion.
It was at the Harbour City Photography Club in Nanaimo, that I started to learn about the real foundations of good photography, such as composition, lighting, and learning the camera’s controls and functions and capabilities. I was also constantly inspired by the works of the other talented photographers (such as Wayne Buhr and Kelli Etheridge) in the Club. But mainly I was very fortunate to be mentored by other more experienced Club members such as the late Bob Goerzen and the truly amazing Sean Sherstone. It means so much to an aspiring photographer to be encouraged by such superior photographers. It gives you the confidence to express yourself artistically, and to constantly push your own boundaries.
These days I belong to two really great photography clubs. The Oceanside Photographers Club in Qualicum Beach and the Harbour City Photography Club in Nanaimo, and I do try to get out to as many meetings as I can.
Photography is now my creative passion. It is not often that I don’t have a camera by my side. I try to get out and explore and photograph as much of my home, the beautiful Vancouver Island, as possible. From our very British Capital, Victoria, at the south end of the Island, all the way up to Port Hardy at the rugged north end, chances are you’ll run into me and my camera and tripod somewhere sometime!
I also constantly try to expand my knowledge of photography and digital editing. I love to challenge myself and experiment with new photography techniques. Twilight and Night photography are my favourites! I am also currently working on improving my HDR, Exposure Blending, Panoramas, and Long Exposures.
So please stop in regularly to check out my blog and see what I've been up to photography-wise and make sure to let me know you were here!
