Well it has been a few years since I have photographed the Roosevelt Elk in the Cowichan Valley, I had heard that the resident herds had really increased in size in the last few years. I had also seen some evidence of that while working down in the area. So Pete Caljouw and I spent the whole day yesterday looking for them in the Youbou area. We ran into a small herd 1st thing in the morning and I have to admit that I got so excited I pretty much ruined every shot I took. It was a good thing we ran into another small herd later in the day! There were app. 6 females with a young bull. They were laying down not doing too much when we first saw them. But we were very patient with them and later they rewarded us by getting up and moving through the forest and giving us lots of great photo opps. Here are some of my favorite shots from yesterday (including some scenery shots!).
