I just installed the latest firmware release (2.0) for my Olympus OMD EM5 this week. The major improvement for me was that Olympus added 100ISO (yippee!). They also added smaller focus points which I will try out soon as well. I decided I had to see what kind of a difference the 100ISO made to my long exposures as opposed to 200ISO and then I also turned off the in-camera noise reduction. The in-camera noise reduction was adding crazy processing times to each long exposure shot and frankly was driving me crazzzzzyyyy. I went out with my fotofrend Sucha Ollek and we did some early morning/ pre-dawn shots at Brickyard Community Park in Nanoose Bay. As always I seem to like the pre-dawn shots more than the actual sunrise! My verdict on 100ISO? Well I think there is definitely less noise in the shadows than I saw before.
A sudden and unusual blast of cold weather on the Island has created all sorts of icy wonders for me to photograph! Today I took the dogs and wandered along the Englishman River in Parksville for almost 4 hours. I could have spent days there it seemed. Every little side channel of the river held new things to photograph. It was also my first chance to use my new Hoya 10 Stop ND Filter and try out Olympus's Live Preview long exposure feature.
