Here are some of the first high iso images taken with my new Sony A7S full frame 12 mp camera. I took a walk around downtown Nanaimo tonight with my camera in hand and left the tripod in the trunk! All images here were shot hand-held with the 24-70 Zeiss F4 Fe Mount stabilized lens on the camera.
These images have been quickly and minimally edited and the only noise reduction was done in Lightroom with anywhere from 10-40% applied to the luminance slider and even less smoothing applied. I definitely feel I could have applied more if I felt like it and not lost too much detail. It's a very fine grained noise.
My first impressions are pretty good. I set the camera to auto iso with a maximum of 12,800. The 12,800 iso images are definitely grainy but still very usable for web display and still have pretty decent detail in them. The 8000 iso and lower iso images are nothing short of breathtaking and need very little or no noise reduction!
Another nice surprise is how much detail I can pull out of the shadows and with little or no noise in them. It's just something I haven't been used to using cameras with crop sensors.
